Back at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in a unique episode centered around your favorite problematic couple: Jackson and April. Tonight captured their tug-of-war relationship boiling down to a finish and it does not lack drama.

Some background: For the past few months, Jackson and April’s marriage has been strained due to the loss of their baby and April’s escape to Iraq, where she operated on wounded soldiers. In almost every episode they are seen fighting and we are left in the dust, until now. Shonda reveals what she has in store for the struggling couple. Finally, right?

The episode is put together backwards, with each event shown being followed by whatever happened prior. It begins with Jackson walking in on a bride, Tatiana (we don’t know her), who he gives a loving look with those eyes and we are all rolling up our sleeves, concerned that he already moved on. Keeping us on our toes, Shonda!

From there, we are taken to Jackson and April, emotionally signing their divorce papers. Five minutes in and tears are forming. Incredible.

We are shown several arguments between them, April incessantly wanting to work on things and Jackson wanting to give up. Through this, we see Tatiana, the random bride from before, a long-time patient of Jackson’s. This only makes things more blurry – is she Jackson’s rebound?

A few loud fighting and crying scenes later, we are taken to April and Jackson’s apartment where April has been living alone. The couple is having a casual Chinese food date and making upbeat smalltalk when Jackson suddenly brings up getting a divorce. Cycling back to more fighting and crying and April screaming, “I want to fix things.” We were finally smiling, Shonda!

It was when April blamed her disappearance to Iraq on the death of her child, that Jackson tells her that he has been just as sad but couldn’t escape like she did. Throwing shade, Jackson. Good for you. When April resists talking about divorce, Jackson says, “Divorce isn’t a dirty word — it’s a light at the end of a really dark tunnel.” Boom.

Of course, April starts angrily throwing fortune cookies at him and they make the mistake of making out, like any separated married couple should. Don’t get your hopes up. It’s just Shondaland.

We see some snippets of Tatiana comforting Jackson. Who even are you, Tatiana?

This is where the real tears come: Jackson is taking apart the crib for his dead son and completely breaks down, throwing the pieces everywhere, scratching up his beautiful face. He is all alone. Where are you, April?

The tears don’t end there. Shonda shows us a happy Japril, dancing around the locker room about their pregnancy, unaware of the heartbreak about to come. The whole crew comes in and dances with them, until Callie breaks the news that April is pregnant. They all start hugging and crying and being happy. I’m crying.

And now, we see the moment that changed everything for Jackson and April. The moment April chose Jackson in the middle of her wedding to Matthew. The moment they became Japril. Nothing is more beautiful than the two of them running out of the wedding, hand in hand. How disappointing. Meredith and Derek got married on a Post It and they lasted. Nothing’s fair in Shondaland.

Finally, we are back to the present. April looks to Jackson and asks, “This is what you want?” Without a reply, April signs and leaves the room. Something isn’t right.

We finally find out that Tatiana, the patient/bride, is not Jackson’s rebound but a close friend who he’s walking down the aisle. Jackson may be divorcing April but he is still a gentleman.

Hold onto your seats. Arizona comes into April’s apartment armed with some alcohol, and April declines. “You just got divorced and you don’t want to drink? What, are you pregnant?”

“I think I am.”

Yes. April is pregnant with Jackson. Anything is possible, shouldn’t we know that by now? Will she tell Jackson? Will they get back together? What’s to come for this cracked-up relationship? We’ll find out when we binge again on Thursday at 8 p.m.!
