The 2026 Met Gala has once again proved why it’s considered the largest night in fashion, and did not miss the mark. This year’s theme was “Costume Art,” and encouraged celebrities to turn famous artwork into wearable fashion. From simple looks to those who went above and beyond, most attendees explored the facets of costume art while others played it safe, leading to mixed reactions across social media. The Met Gala serves as a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. However, for viewers, it has become an annual showcase of celebrity fashion and artistic expression.
Some celebrities nailed this year’s theme, and Emma Chamberlain is no exception. From transforming herself from a teenage youtuber into a podcaster and businesswoman, Chamberlin has been known to outdress some of the most popular A-listers on the carpet. She was seen wearing a beautiful gown allegedly inspired by the works of Van Gogh. Her colorful dress immediately captured the attention and helped establish the tone of the night. Angela Bassett also stunned audiences wearing a beautiful soft rose gown based on the painting “Girl in a Pink Dress.” Not only was her outfit stunning, but it paid homage to artwork created during the Harlem Renaissance. Madonna delivered one of the night’s boldest fashion statements.. This hard to miss outfit was complete with a ginormous pirate ship headpiece and a purple veil that extended out into her assistants. Her ensemble was inspired by the painting “The Temptation of St. Anthony. Fragment II.” This kooky look perfectly represented the uniqueness and creativity of Madonna.
Moving onto more stars who shined, the “Heated Rivalry” breakout star Hudson Williams took to the carpet. Williams was wearing an archived Balenciaga outfit inspired by Spanish Matador paintings. His stunning blue suit complimented his eye makeup that referenced the black swan. Male celebrities, who are often criticized for putting little effort into Met Gala fashion, appeared to take more risks this year. Ben Platt wore a patterned suit modeled after Georges Seurat’s painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” One notable headliner of the night was Beyonce, making her return after 10 years of not attending The Met. Beyonce’s outfit was based on “The Visitor,” a painting done by Caroline Durieux, which depicts a skeleton wearing a beautiful gown waiting at a door, which seems fitting for Beyonce’s anticipated reunion with the Met Gala.
Unfortunately, not all celebrities came dressed to impress. Contrary to Beyonce’s top-tier return, her husband Jay-Z was criticized online, and many claimed he looked like he came dressed straight from a men’s wearhouse. Nicole Kidman, the co-chair of the gala, wore a shimmering red dress that may have been glamorous, but is far from following the theme. As for Finn Wolfhard, although his stylist described it as a “moody minimalist” outfit, he’s just sporting a beige and white suit. Amanda Seyfried, who typically shines on the carpet, disappointed many fans by wearing a long bubblegum pink gown that critics compared to a bland prom dress.
While some outfits received critiques for their blandness or ugliness, some received hate for their irony. Sarah Paulson wore an outfit protesting “The One Percent” through the use of money to represent an eye mask. Although her protest is something that more people should be recognizing her for, critics argued it was poor taste coming from someone who is borderline in “The One Percent.” For someone having an estimated net worth of 12 million, critics plead her tone-deafness destroyed the outfit. Even if Paulson is the wrong messenger, at least she acknowledges the power of the overly wealthy.
Despite critics on social media having mixed thoughts on the turnout of this year’s gala, the theme had a more subtle turnout than anticipated. At first glance, an outfit may seem boring or not on theme, but for artists, seeing underappreciated artwork conveyed through dresses and suits made it a magical night. This event helped reinforce that fashion is an art form, even when the outfit’s don’t directly represent paintings and statues. This year’s gala proved that art truly is subjective, however there’s no doubt 2026’s biggest night in fashion was entertaining for all.
