The 2026 Tony Awards are just around the corner and the competition is tougher than ever. On June 7th at 8 P.M., Radio City Musical Hall will host these talents and announce who will take home these high honors. With astonishing new musicals and incredible revivals of crowd pleasers from the past, this season is sure to have something for everyone. Events like the Oscars and Emmys celebrate talent on screen, however the Tony awards celebrate those who stepped on stage day in and day out to showcase their talents.
Returning to the stage this season are some of Broadway’s best. Lea Michelle reprised the role of Florence Vassy in the musical “Chess” alongside Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher. Jessica Vosk in “Beaches” and Shoshana Bean in “The Lost Boys” took their already immense Broadway stardom to the next level as they starred in these new musicals. “Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York, Titanique” and “Schmigadoon!” also stunned audiences as part of the new musical category. As for plays, this season was nothing short of incredible. “Liberation” not only floored audiences but also won The Pulitzer Prize for drama. Stars like Adrian Brody, Daniel Radcliffe, Rose Bryne and Kelli O’Hara also starred in some of this season’s most beloved plays. The Tony Award nominations have officially been announced; here is the full breakdown.
In the category of “Best New Musical,” four newly crafted productions will compete for arguably the most celebrated Tony award. “The Lost Boys,” loosely based on the 1987 film, is a story of the Emerson family who moves to Santa Clara for a new start but takes an unexpected dark turn. “Schmigadoon!” is a lighthearted, comedy piece where a regular couple travels to a magical town full of song and puts their relationship to the test. “Titaníque” is also nominated in this category. This story ponders the idea of what it would look like if Céline Dion had been there during the time of Jack and Rose’s love story on the Titanic. Rounding out the category is “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).” This new musical navigates the eventful journey between two strangers who are thrown together to run errands in New York for a wedding. Each of these musicals have produced raving reviews and proved their worthiness of this high honor.
Any good show is dependent on a good cast, and this season has some of Broadway’s biggest stars. In the category of Best Leading Actress in a Musical, five incredibly talented first time nominees secured a spot in the running. “Shmigadoon!”’s Sara Chase was nominated for her role as Melissa Gimble. In the revival of “Ragtime,” Caissie Levy acquired her nomination for her role as Mother. Stephanie Hsu was nominated for her reprisal of Janet Weiss in “Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show.” Co-creator and lead actress of “Titaníque,” Marla Mindelle secured her nomination for her leading role of Céline Dion. The final nominee for Best Leading Actress in a Musical is Christiani Pitts who plays Robin in “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).”
Not only is the category for Best leading Actress packed with talent, but the Best Leading Actor category is as well. Nicolas Christopher is the only “Chess” cast member to be nominated for a leading role. His performance as Anatoly Sergievsky not only got him his nomination, but the internet is also buzzing over the approximately 20 second long note he consistently holds at each and every show. Nominee Luke Evans stepped into the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show.” Joshua Henry’s reprisal of Coalhouse Walker Jr in the revival of “Ragtime” has become a fan favorite this season and earned him a nomination. Also in “Ragtime” is nominee Brandon Uranowitz, nominated for his role as Tateh. The final nominee in this category is Sam Tutty who has captured audiences with his charm and talent throughout his ongoing run as Dougal Todd in “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).”
No matter what kind of viewer you are, this season is sure to have something for everyone. With big name stars, revivals and new musicals as well as an abundance of incredible plays, many believe that a trip to Broadway is a must. In addition to these three main categories, crew members are nominated and awarded for their hard work in categories like Best Original Score, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, Best Sound Design of a Musical and many more aspects both on stage and off stage that go into creating these wonderful shows. This night of high honor gives recognition to all people on stage and off who put their full effort into these beloved productions.
