When Millie Calloway, played by Sydney Sweeney, is hired to work as a live-in housekeeper for the seemingly perfect Winchester family, the family’s frightful secrets are revealed. Author Freida McFadden’s book comes to life in this movie adaptation that will leave viewers jaw-dropped with the film’s plot twists.
Nina Winchester, played by Amanda Seyfried, offers a job to Millie who is struggling to get her life together after being released on parole. Millie is hired for the job. though she assumed she was not getting after lying during the interview and moved in as quickly as possible. Hauling her singular bag into the well-polished mansion of the Winchesters, Millie makes herself at home in the attic of the house. The closed-off room is very uninviting to Millie as it becomes known that the only window is sealed shut and the door to the room only locks from the outside. Brushing it off, Millie focuses on trying her best for her new job that will keep her parole officer satisfied. On the first few days of her job, Millie starts to get a sense of what the Winchesters are like. While minding her business and looking after the house, Millie notices a strange dynamic between Nina and her husband Andrew, who is played by Brandon Sklenar. Nina gets upset over the littlest of things and begins to blame Millie for purposely wronging her, throwing child-like temper tantrums and breaking out into a hysterical state. Everywhere Millie turns, she feels as if Nina is creepily watching and wanting to strike at her next. Andrew, on the other hand, is completely calm when Nina acts out and quickly diffuses the situation by calming her down, unfazed that his wife is acting crazy. Millie becomes increasingly nervous about living with the Winchesters after hearing murder-like screams coming from Andrew and Nina’s bedroom and learning that Nina has a past of being in f psych wards.
Through the rest of the film, the audience finds out the truth behind Nina and Andrew, revealing the real reason behind Nina’s intentions for hiring Millie. Freida McFadden’s story is brought to life with impressive acting and chilling surprises that left the theatres in shock and on the edge of their seats. “The Housemaid” is a must-see that will leave viewers curious about every wealthy couple they come across and their certainty in gentlemen.
