Season 2 of “Nobody Wants This” was released on Oct. 23, leaving some wondering who actually wants this? The Rom-Com show created by Erin Foster, and her sister Sara Foster, was a hit on Netflix after its season 1 release in September 2024. With a star-studded cast including Kristen Bell, Adam Brody, Leighton Meister and Jackie Tohn, the talent in this show is undeniable. Fans, however, feel that it wasn’t the acting that missed the mark; it was the storyline. Many drew parallels from the first season to the second and saw great similarities between the two, highlighting its redundancy and leaving fans bored. After finishing both seasons, I can most definitely say the same, but is this a bad thing?
Season 1 was filled with firsts. The first time Joanne, played by Kristen Bell and Noah, played by Adam Brody meet, their first kiss, the first time meeting the parents and their first break up. As the two navigated their new relationship, the ups and downs intrigued the audience and left them wanting more. Luckily for myself and many fans alike, Season 2 of “Nobody Wants This” was released shortly after the first.
Whispers about the unoriginality of this new season have swirled, and many believe their expectations for this love story were not met. The show’s first season was such a hit that it felt like season 2 may have purposely been trying to mirror its predecessor. Many, along with myself, felt like the new season was full of seconds. The same as the first season, just slightly different, which gave it that unoriginal feel. But if the first season was so good, what is bad about more of that goodness?
Personally, I see no problem with these parallels. Was the storyline very similar to the first season? Yes. Was it slightly predictable? Also, yes, but I think in this situation, this is how the show is supposed to feel. I personally believe this show is supposed to be lighthearted, funny and bingeable. It would make no sense for the characters to live completely different lives with totally new mindsets. Watching the couple fall in love, merge their friends and live their lives together is something the viewers just can’t resist. This chaotic, complex and real feel to the show is what makes it so good and even though both seasons were very similar, I feel like if it works, it works and in this case, it most definitely works.
Overall, this new season is more similar to the last, but it truly never gets old. The developing friendships, growing relationships, funny family dynamics, subtle Jewish humor and comfort feel to the show make it just that good. Whether or not this new season is unoriginal is up for debate, but no matter how people feel, this show is undeniably entertaining and a must-watch this fall season.
