Prom vs. ACT Poll and Comments
October 30, 2019
The Story:
Prom being scheduled Friday, April 3rd, and the ACT being scheduled Saturday, April 4th caused a great commotion among the junior class and West Essex community. Parents and students complained that given the school’s emphasis on preparing for tests and assignments, the date of the prom contradicted this value. After many complaints and meetings, the board decided it would be best to move the prom to Thursday, April 2nd. We polled 100 juniors to see how they feel about the date change.
The Responses:
“I was so amazed. I thought it was a prank and just a joke.” – Carly Feuerstein, Junior
“I feel like it is a bad idea because kids are going to get absences from school and nobody is going to go to school on Friday, so I think it is just unnecessary to have it on Thursday.” – Antonella Mellilo, Sophomore
“I feel bad for the other grades, it is not really fair to them, just because they’re losing certain opportunities that we had and now nobody else will. It kinda just sucks for them.” – Jack Cunningham, Senior
“I found out once they sent the email and once I knew the ACT was the day after, I made sure my mom wasn’t making me take the ACT that date.” – Nick Lagreca, Junior
“I don’t think it is fair to the people who wanted to go down the shore for prom and have to take the ACT, but I am not taking the ACT.” – John Barbaro, Junior
“I think that people are overreacting over the whole ACT situation because this date has been set for many months now and the juniors have known about it for a long time, and this is only because of their shore plans, so they can just alter their ACT dates” -Mike Aktas, Junior
