In the past month, the ‘beauty community’ on YouTube has seen its darkest days. In 2016, popular YouTuber, Tati Westbrook acted as a mentor and motherly-figure to fellow YouTuber, James Charles. When James moved to Los Angeles at a young age and alone, Tati, alongside her husband, helped James negotiate deals and build his career when he faced several scandals.

Tati, creator of Halo Beauty, sells vitamins to promote hair growth and more. James promoted Sugar Bear Hair, a strong competitor of Tati’s brand, just to get free VIP Coachella passes. Tati then dropped a 43 minute video on May 10, called “Bye Sister,” exposing James and unassociating herself with him, labeling him as toxic.

In the video, she accused James of being a sexual predator, a bad friend, and only caring for himself and Tati said, “he believed their sexuality doesn’t matter because he is a celebrity.” In the first 24 hours after Tati posted her video, James became the first ever YouTuber to lose over one million subscribers in that short of time, where on the other hand, Tati gained over 5 million since the scandal. James posted an emotional apology in response to Tati’s video. Ex-fans think the video seemed extremely scripted and felt as though he acted out emotions he didn’t truly feel.

In addition, people feel he only posted it for publicity and to make himself look more innocent.

Multiple celebrities including the Kardashians and Demi Lovato have unfollowed James on Instagram in response to the allegations. Other YouTubers such as Jeffree Star have spoken out on the incident. Jeffree posted mean and close to harassing tweets not only about James, but also toward his younger brother, Ian. Fans were upset with Jeffree for involving himself and posting demeaning tweets. Since all of this drama,  James also posted a 40 minute video called “No More Lies,” showing ‘receipts’ and giving his side of the story. This time James’ video is addressing the feud and he made sure to address her claims with every bit of evidence he had.

After that video posted, James started flourishing again, gaining followers rapidly, while Tati was now losing them. Almost a day later, Jeffree Star posted a video apologizing for getting involved and mentioning how this should all be left in the past.

All three of these stars decided to leave the drama in the past, and hopefully rebuild their brands and get their life back together. To viewers, the fighting and drama is entertaining, but it is important to realize that these are people’s real lives.
