Music festival lineups hit a sour note

Whether it’s for the stylish outfits, the perfect Instagram post, or to jam out to their favorite artists live, it’s no doubt that people love going to music festivals. Each year the announcement of the festival lineups gets students pumped up for the upcoming summer months.

The lineup for the nearby New York festival, Gov Ball, underwhelmed many students. When the lineup was first released, people were disappointed to not see any of their favorite mainstream top 40 artists headlining the show. Unlike past years at the festival, which typically showcased three main headlining artists (one per night), this year there are nine headliners in total; including Lil Wayne, The 1975, SZA and Tyler, the Creator, among many others. Headliners can make or break the desire to attend a festival and this year there are not as many popular ones drawing in an audience as there have been in the past.

“I went two years ago to see Chance [The Rapper],” senior Alexis Cruz said. “Last year I wish I went to see Posty, and this year there is literally no one I’d be missing.”

Even without any A-List performers this year, the many stages of Gov Ball will still be graced by countless interesting and energetic acts that will make the festival be worth going to. Artists like Vince Staples and Brockhampton are not new to the festival scene and can be expected to deliver a set that will keep the audience jumping and dancing throughout the day.

“I’m excited to see Sheck Wes perform the most legendary song of all time… Mo Bamba,” senior Bella Buccino said.

For festival-goers whose hearts were truly set on seeing some of the biggest and best artists of the past year, Travis Scott and Post Malone can be found headlining the Firefly Festival in Dover, Delaware, from June 21-23.

“I love the headliners and like that there are a lot of artists performing there,” senior Caylin Tober said.

The lineups for other relatively close festivals like Panorama and Made in America should be expected to be released within the coming months before the shows take place in the second half of summer 2019. Until then, students will be stocking up on portable chargers and shopping for the perfect festival fashion in prep for the long days enjoying their favorite music out in the sun.
