Films venture far for film locations
April 3, 2019
There are many aspects that go into creating a film. Whether it be the actors/actresses, or the costumes, everything comes into play. However, one of the most important aspects always seems to not get enough credit. The locations of where television shows and movies are filmed are incredibly important and surprisingly very interesting.
When a production is filmed in a specific location, rather than just using a green screen, it feels more realistic and set in place. Mostly in fiction films, the locations can become creative, such as being set on an island or in exact locations where the films take place. Here are some movies and films that were filmed in exotic or interesting locations:
“Game of Thrones”
The “Game of Thrones” television series takes its filming location very seriously. With it being one of the largest television productions in history, everything has to go with the plot and time frame of the show. In order to keep the medieval look real, the production team along with the cast would travel to multiple countries to get the best background for different scenes. It was filmed in Northern Ireland, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, Scotland and Spain.
If you are a diehard GOT fan you would know that the Wall is an extremely important location throughout all season. The Wall was filmed near the southernmost city, Vik, Iceland.
“A Wrinkle in Time”
The filming for “A Wrinkle in Time” took place in multiple locations of California. The production was housed at Santa Clarita Studios in Los Angeles County, but for the last two weeks of production, it moved filming locations to Central Otago, New Zealand. They filmed in the Southern Alps, including filming at Hunter Valley Station near Lake Hawea as well.
“Jumanji; Welcome to the Jungle”
The most recent addition to the “shot in Hawaii” movies is “Jumanji; Welcome to the Jungle.” This movie was as shot primarily on Oahu, Hawaii with some scenes being filmed in Kualoa Ranch and Kawainui Falls in Pepeekeo, HI. The producers of this show filmed in Hawaii to achieve a tropical look for the movie. To thank the people in Hawaii, natives got a early showing of the movie.
“Harry Potter”
Harry Potter was filmed in various places in England and Scotland. Several filming locations in London include Leadenhall market used as Diagon Alley, the Australia house used as Gringotts bank and Scotland Place and the Scotland Yard used as the entrance to the Ministry of Magic. The filming locations in England were mostly used for scenes that took place outside of Hogwarts, while destinations in Scotland were used more for the Hogwarts setting. Jacobite Steam Train and Glenfinnan Viaduct were also used in Scotland. The memorable, scenic backgrounds near Hogwarts were filmed at these places.
“The Impossible”
This movie was filmed in Thailand in 2012 and it tells the true story, in excruciating detail, of what happened to the Belons, a family who was caught up with millions of people in a tsunami. The movie was filmed in the exact hotel that the Belons stayed during the disaster, giving the movie a very realistic feel. Real survivors were used as extras and to help the actors get into character.
Along with many other films, using real locations and places makes each scene unique from any other. There is a lot of hard work that goes into traveling for filming, but it brings every aspect of the final product together.
