2018 Emmy Awards spark mixed reviews

The 70th Emmy Awards hosted by comedians Michael Che and Colin Jost held on Sept. 17 has had a number of mixed reviews so far. While some critics are pleased with the winners, others commented on their failed attempt to diversify, and many noticed the drop in ratings, a problem across all award shows.

Netflix took the most nominations this year with 112, outnumbering HBO for the first time with only 108. In the end the two major content providers tied both taking home 23 wins. Amazon’s original comedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” was another big hit with five awards, the most of any program.
Director Glenn Weiss surprised the audience after proposing to his girlfriend on stage during his acceptance speech. The director has won over 12 Emmys so far in addition to a new fiance.

“It was really cute when he proposed,” sophomore Kylie O’Connor said. “If that were me I would have died I loved it.”

Ratings for the Emmys have been dropping every year. This year the award show hit an all time low. The shift away from award shows in general is due to a combination of factors. Many Americans have expressed frustration with the political stands the shows take, and others just do not care to watch.

Students at West Essex are generally split. Some tuned in Monday night while others did not.

“I watched the Emmys for the red carpet,” junior Lindsay Fusco said. “I love looking at all the dresses and seeing who is there.”

“I didn’t watch I don’t care about that stuff,” senior Connor McCarthy said. “I don’t even know what half of the shows are that win. Never watched, never will.”
