Contrary to popular belief, EDM (“Electronic Dance Music”) is not just people head bobbing to provocative, hard dubstep beats; not that this stereotype is particularly bad, but it does not fully define what EDM is. EDM encompasses a broad range of genres and subgenres that are generally made for dance-based environments, such as nightclubs and festivals. It’s not the most newcomer-friendly style of music, though — so for the uninitiated, here are the best five EDM songs that you need to put on repeat — or, at least give a listen to.
- Galantis – “Runaway (U & I)”
Ever feel stuck in a place you don’t want to be in? This song gives off the escapist feeling of an intense desire to “run away” with a person you love or maybe just yourself. While some say the chorus can get a little repetitive, it is that which reinforces the song’s message. To me, this song is perfect to put on right before you go travelling.
- Swedish House Mafia – “Don’t You Worry Child”
People gravitate toward this song because it simply hits home. Arguably the best part of this song is how the gritty sounding vocals compliment the reminiscing tone of the song. This song is sometimes sped up and edited by DJ’s at festivals, but it can also stand alone as a meaningful song that could be played at anytime to cure your worries and doubts.
- Marshmello – “Alone”
This song is a dance hit among many; and for good reason. It features a steady build up that makes the listener on the edge of their seat for song’s electric beat drop. At a party, people will be exploding off of the ground when they hear it, so watch out for your safety unless you like being thrown into a mosh pit. Surprisingly, the song’s lyrics during the build up are somber and honest, which I believe adds a nice touch to the song overall.
“I’m so alone, nothing feels like home
I’m so alone, trying to find my way back home to you.”
- Kygo – “This Town” ft. Sasha Sloan
Something about this song gets right to your core. The slow, soothing sounds set an eerie but wistful mood. The vocals on this track are sublime; especially because they seamlessly match so well with the steady and transfixing beat. Usually, I play this song whenever I want to think deeply or if I’m just chilling out.
- Avicii – “The Nights”
It was almost impossible to choose a favorite Avicii song, given that they are all so profound. This upbeat song balances the right amount of a feel-good beat with inspiring lyrics to live life to the fullest. This song is perfect to listen to when you are having a good night or want to be inspired to have one.
“He said, one day you’ll leave this world behind
So live a life you will remember.”
