May 8, 2018
As a freshman, Garrett Kessler is the golf team’s top golfer. He has helped lead the team to success throughout this season. He won the individual golf champion at the Essex County Tournament on April 18 and was named the West Essex athlete of the week. Garrett answered a few questions about his achievements, devotion to the sport and his next steps in pursuing his golf career.
When did you start golfing?
When I was three years old, my dad got me a set of plastic golf clubs and I would sit in my backyard and hit them all day.
What is your favorite part of being on the golf team?
My favorite part of being on the golf team is that all of the kids on the team are friends and get along well. It is also fun playing with each other and competing against other schools.
Do you have any notable accomplishments?
I competed in the IMG Junior World where I won by one shot and I participated in the NJPGA Academy and I won in my division. Last year I also won two tournaments in my age division. I also sometimes compete against people who are older than me.
What is your favorite part about being on the golf team?
I love that you can’t really get hurt and that I get to play every day. I also caddy so I have a job outside of the sport.
Is there anything you are looking forward to in the future?
This year I was the IMG World Qualifier where I won by one shot, so I will be traveling to San Diego this summer to compete. I also love to compete in tournaments and I am looking forward to improving my game.
