Six nominations and one win, “This Is Us” definitely made its mark at the Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 7 on NBC. Sterling K. Brown, who plays Randall in the series, took home the win for Best Actor in a Drama TV Series, being the first African American to win the award. Brown’s hard work and dedication to the show has led him to make history, triumphing over four white actors: Jason Bateman, Freddie Highmore, Bob Odenkirk and Liev Schreiber.
In his speech, Brown thanked the show’s creator, Dan Fogelman, for creating a role specifically for an African American. “What I appreciate so much about this is that I’m being seen for who I am, and being appreciated for who I am. And it makes it that much more difficult to dismiss me, or dismiss anybody who looks like me,” Brown said in his speech.
Brown kicked off his acting career guest starring as Christopher Darden on “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” later landing the role of Randall on “This Is Us,” a NBC drama with growing popularity that has spread to students at West Essex. Fans of the show recognize Brown’s achievement, as well as the positive response to the show overall.
“It’s awesome that Sterling K. Brown was so influential and that he was able to win this award” junior Megan Morganti said.
“‘This Is Us’ is such an amazing show” freshman Lauren Snerson said. “I was so excited to see it get recognized at the Golden Globes.”
The drama has been nominated for 59 awards since it first premiered in 2016, and had taken home 25 wins, including Sterling K. Brown’s award for Best Actor in a TV Drama. Brown has made history for both the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the African American community due to his hard work and dedication as an actor.
“Sterling K. Brown is literally the best character on that show.” junior Sofia Russo said. “He makes me laugh and cry and it’s only natural that he would be the first African American to win this award.”
