Manicure Mania
February 19, 2018
Just as the seasons come and go, so does the color of choice for West Essex girls manicures. By simply taking a look at the color of most girls nails throughout the halls, a trend is clearly present. But will 2018 bring new and improved designs? Or will students here remain with the timeless, classic look of a simple coat?
There is most definitely a noticeable pattern describing the manicure of choice. Most consist of a plain gel manicure with no design. Despite it’s cheaper pricing, regular polish has fallen off a cliff simply because a trip back to the nail salon is guaranteed within a few days. The regular polish does not contain the same ingredients as gel polish, which stays on the nails more efficiently and does not chip as soon.
In addition to getting a gel manicure, West Essex girls clearly base their color of choice on the seasons. Around the holidays, they like getting seasonal colors such as red, for Christmas, or sparkles, for New Years.
“During Christmas time I usually go a little different and get christmas colors and designs” sophomore Marisa Hayek said.
Fall colors consist mostly of darker, neutral colors, such as beige, maroon, or gray. In the spring, lighter colors show up, especially pastels. Popular summer colors are white, and many other bright, popping colors.
Although most West Essex students have their mind’s set on these seasonal trends, they aren’t so open-minded about the predicted trends for nail designs in 2018. According to Glamour’s predictions based off of the Spring 2018 runways, new year trends will mainly focus on metallic and a clear coat with colored designs. This may be hot in the fashion industry, but not for typical teenage girls, at West Essex at least. The metallic look attracted more girls than the clear coat with colored design.
“I like changing the color of my nails throughout the seasons but I don’t think I would try the 2018 ideas” sophomore Jackie Hyams said.
When simply asking if girls would even prefer a design on their nails anymore, let alone the very “out-there” new year trends, many failed to say they would even consider doing it.
“I don’t like anything crazy” junior Teresa Antunes said. “These designs look like a five year old’s”.
Just because girl students are willing to change their nail color for the seasons, does not mean they plan to follow the trend for the new year. Maybe new trends will have better luck next year, but for now, don’t plan on seeing 2018 nail fashion statements roaming the West Essex halls.
