Advancing from Sectionals to Groups is not an easy feat, however, many of West Essex’s very own spring track and field athletes reached this accomplishment. On May 29 and 30, several Knights extended their seasons and delivered standout performances at the Group 2 State Championships, highlighting a season defined by dedication and perseverance.
“The athletes who qualified for the Group 2 State Championships are all unique in some ways but they also share many commonalities,” head coach Anthony Emering said. “They also possess a level of confidence and faith that their hard work will result in positive outcomes.
Competing at the Sectional Championships on May 14 and 15, the Knights produced several notable results. Senior Kayla Felix and juniors Caroline Campbell, Brooklyn Spango and Madison Spango helped the girls’ 4×100-meter relay team finish fifth while setting a new personal record against tough competition. Senior Justin Fredella also qualified for Groups by placing sixth in the mile with a time of 4:34. In addition to the runners, senior javelin thrower Jack Damer placed third, recording a 149 foot and 6 inch throw. This meet not only provided a confidence boost for the team, but also set the stage for the Group Championship.
“Although we didn’t PR or place at Groups to advance further, it was still an amazing experience to compete at that level together,” sprinter Brooklyn Spango said. “Qualifying for Groups felt really rewarding because it showed that all the long practices, conditioning and especially all the time we spent working on handoffs helped us accomplish something as a team.”
According to Coach Emering, the team’s success can be attributed to the culture built on excellence, commitment and trust in the process. The coaching staff has consistently challenged all athletes to perform at a high level, while the athletes themselves remain dedicated to the goals they set for themselves throughout the season. In a sport like track where performance is measured down to seconds or inches, athletes are able to clearly track their progress and push themselves to reach their goals.
“My team’s ethic and resilience during practice and outside of practice contributed to this achievement,” sprinter Madison Spango said. “Without maintaining a healthy diet, pushing yourself in the workouts and getting a good night’s rest, none of this was possible. The entire relay team did that for each other and I think that shows how strong our bond really is.”
In addition to Sectionals and Groups, the Knights found success at the Essex County Relay Championships, where ten athletes earned medals. Damer and Mason Holmes medaled in the javelin relay, while Miles Schmidt, Brandon Berwanger, Blake Berwanger and Fredella medaled in the 4×1600-meter relay, breaking the school record.
“I think consistency contributed the most to my success this season,” distance runner Fredella said. “I stayed committed to training, trusted the process and focused on improving each week. Having strong teammates and coaches around me also helped push me to be better.”
On the girls side, Serena Rauscher, Ella Perez, Sapna Patel and Chloe Peterson also medaled in the 4×1600-meter relay. Damer and Fredella secured individual medals in the Essex County Individual Championships, adding to an impressive showing for West Essex.
“With dedication for your event, you can see yourself output numbers never seen before,” thrower Damer said. “I’ve been doing this event for seven years and each year I always try to give my all and go beyond what is possible or required.”
As the season comes to a close, the accomplishments the Knights reached extended far past medals and records. Through their hard work, both the coaches and athletes have laid a strong foundation for the track program and are prepared to continue to raise the standards for success in years to come.
