In a historic World Baseball Classic final, the Venezuelan National Baseball Team defeated the United States, 3-2, securing their country’s first tournament title. The victory capped off an impressive run for Venezuela, a country that is known for producing elite baseball talent.
Cincinnati Reds veteran third baseman Eugenio Suarez was the hero of the night, delivering the game-winning double in the top of the ninth inning. With the score tied 2-2 late, Suarez drove in the decisive run, shifting the momentum in Venezuela’s favor at the most critical moment of the tournament.
Venezuela’s success throughout the tournament was driven by offensive production, especially from Kansas City Royals infielder Maikel Garcia, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. On the mound, Chicago Cubs closer Daniel Palencia was able to secure the one-run lead and seal the victory.
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Venezuela striking first in the third inning on an RBI sac-fly from Garcia. Shortly after, Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu hit a solo home run in the fifth. Venezuela held a 2-0 lead until the eighth inning when Phillies star Bryce Harper delivered a clutch two-run home run to tie the game.
Despite the late surge from the Americans, Venezuela answered immediately in the ninth inning before turning the game over to its bullpen, where they shut down the final three batters for the U.S.
Venezuela’s path to the title included key victories over powerhouse teams, including the Dominican Republic and the defending champions, Japan.
The 2026 World Baseball Classic featured 20 teams from around the world and continued to highlight the sport’s growing international reach. Teams consisted of MLB stars, including Aaron Judge, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Shohei Ohtani, which helped drive record-breaking viewership before Opening Day of the regular season.
For the United States, the loss marks a second consecutive runner-up finish despite a talented roster. For Venezuela, this moment was historic: they reached the pinnacle of international baseball and brought back a championship to their country, which has a passion for baseball like no other.
