The New York Football Giants have hired John Harbaugh as their new head coach ahead of the 2026 season. He becomes the 24th head coach in Giants history and replaces both former head coach Brian Daboll and interim head coach Mike Kafka. Harbaugh brings a Super Bowl ring and years of experience to MetLife Stadium, with many fans anticipating that he will restore consistency and toughness to an organization that has been faced with recent struggles.
Harbaugh came to the Giants after a long and successful tenure with the Baltimore Ravens, where he served as the head coach since 2008. Under his leadership, the Ravens posted a 180-113 record. During his 18 seasons in Baltimore, he led the team to multiple playoff appearances, recorded 13 career playoff wins and led the team to victory in Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers in 2012.
Harbaugh has built a reputation as a coach who pushes his disciplined players to be leaders on and off the field and is highly respected by many players and coaches in the league. He was the recipient of the NFL Honors – AP Coach of the Year award in 2019 after guiding the Ravens to a 14-2 record and a spot in the playoffs.
Before becoming a head coach, Harbaugh worked his way up through the coaching ranks. He began his career as a member of many college football coaching staffs and served as the Philadelphia Eagles’ special teams coordinator from 1998 to 2006. This special-teams unit’s success helped earn him his first head coaching opportunity with the Ravens.
Throughout his career, Harbaugh has been praised for his ability to connect with players and implement different strategies. His leadership style has helped him maintain one of the longest tenures among active NFL head coaches. Harbaugh’s firing by Baltimore came as a surprise to some, but he quickly became one of the most appealing names on the head-coaching market.
The Giants, who have missed the playoffs the last three seasons, are turning to Harbaugh’s championship experience and leadership skills to hopefully help rebuild the team’s culture and future. The organization has promising young assets, including quarterback Jaxson Dart, running back Cam Skattebo and defensive end Brian Burns. The team hopes Harbaugh will be the guy who guides them back to the playoffs and brings a spark back to a city that hasn’t seen a Super Bowl appearance in over a decade.
