The Universal Dance Association held its annual collegiate competition from Jan. 16-18, displaying athleticism and artistry. In the D1A division, the Ohio State University was crowned Jazz Champions for the third year in a row, and the sixth time in the past seven years. Grand Canyon University won first in the D1 division. In the Pom division, the University of Minnesota won first place for its fourth consecutive year, and Cal State Fullerton won in the D1 division. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, took first place in the hip hop category for the program’s sixth time and also won the Game Day division. In the D1 division, first-time winner Weber State won. Regardless of placements and trophy winners, each dance was filled with passion that made each watch extremely worthwhile.
Although it may seem that Ohio State is the automatic win each year in the jazz category, some dance teams that do not deserve to go unnoticed are Louisiana State University, University of Minnesota, Texas Tech University and University of Michigan, which all placed in the top 10. LSU’s dance was filled with mesmerizing patterns and musicality. LSU is typically known for its Hip Hop dances each year; however, this year, they made a statement in the Jazz category, proving how well-rounded their team is. Minnesota, known for its technique, was a fierce dance with stunning costumes. Texas Tech, which also placed second in the Pom category, always delivers sharp, clean moves that come together to form one energetic routine. Lastly, Michigan used to be the total underdog to many, but its routines keep getting more deserved recognition each year.
In the Pom category, Penn State’s dance was very satisfying and clean, making it exciting to watch. Also, Rutgers really proved itself this year and will be considered a much larger threat next year.
Down a division, Weber State made its case known. With star dancer Carter Williams, fans knew this routine would be legit. Williams was also on “Dancing With The Stars” as a Troupe member. Weber State gives similar energy to the University of Minnesota. Minnesota has plenty of well-known dancers, including Matthew Greco, former Dance Moms cast member Macey Caes and freshman Rayna Reid. As Ohio State and Minnesota are undisputedly considered the two powerhouses of the dance world, this was the first year without the Wagner sisters, Ellie and Ava, respectively, so many wondered if their routines would still have the same spark, but they sure did.
Overall, UDA Nationals is always an exciting weekend for the dance world as it glues fans to their couches all weekend. With action-packed routines and incredible technique, these dances are mesmerizing and deserve the praise they have been receiving.
