I believe the voting age should stay at 18 because 16-year-olds often lack the life experiences and maturity to make educated choices in voting polls. While many teenagers work and have responsibilities at a young age, that is not the same as leaving home, working full-time, or starting college, which helps 18-year-olds understand the impact of adult life. It is this experience that forces young adults to reflect on the policies that they are voting for, which younger teens cannot do. Keeping the age at 18 ensures that voters have more responsibility and perspective when participating in voting.
Some may argue that many teenagers already take on adult responsibilities that are directly affected by political decisions. However, responsibilities do not correlate to good decision making, especially about complex political topics. Teens are also developing their political beliefs and are likely influenced by their parents, surroundings, and social media. It is not until they are on their own and independent that these beliefs are truly formed. For these reasons, I believe the voting age should not be lowered to 16, when young adults are better to take on the responsibility of voting.
