I don’t think the voting age should be lowered to 16. At 16, most teenagers are still figuring out who they are, and many don’t have the maturity to understand complicated political issues. Additionally, political socialization can be a problem as 16-year-olds are often influenced by parents, teachers, and even friends, which can make their votes less independent. On top of that, most teenagers haven’t started dealing with adult responsibilities like paying bills, working full-time, or managing taxes. The right to vote should come when people are more mature and independent.
Some people say lowering the voting age would give young people a say in shaping their future. Although fair, the truth is that 18 is already very young to be making big political choices. By the time someone turns 18, they’ve usually finished high school and have started to see the world more clearly on their own. That makes their vote stronger and more personal. In my opinion, the voting age should stay at 18 because it falls in the perfect spot to balance futuristic views and adult responsibility.
