I feel that the voting age should not be lowered. [As an 18-year-old, people truly gain fiscal responsibility. Many go to college, trade school, or begin their future endeavors. This marks a new era of people’s lives and independence.] Before that, many are not independent and have yet to truly research the way the world works as it has not been necessary. Another reason is that political debates in school would become much more heated and much more common. Political polarization is already a massive problem in our country, and attempting to keep it out of schools for the most part is crucial. Unfortunately, more political tension in schools is likely to lead to violence.
One reason some might use to suggest the voting age should be lowered is that people who are sixteen and seventeen are impacted by the election. However, I feel this argument lacks weight. By this logic, a 14-year-old should have the ability to vote as the election may affect them too. As everyone will be affected, the decision of what the voting age should be comes down to independence and responsibility.
