Kyren Lacy, a former star wide receiver for Louisiana State University, has been in recent headlines for reasons outside of football. In December 2024, Lacy was allegedly driving recklessly, speeding into oncoming traffic. According to state police, Lacy’s driving in his green Charger into traffic directly led to the chain of events that involved other drivers, leading to a fatal car crash that killed a 78-year-old man.
In January, the state police issued a warrant for his arrest. Lacy turned himself in to the authorities after allegations of homicide, felony hit-and-run and reckless driving. He was later released on bail. In April of 2025, days before his case was being presented to a judge, Lacy was found dead due to a self-inflicted gunshot.
Over the past weeks, more information and surveillance footage have come to light, showing that Lacy could not have caused the crash. His defense attorney, Matt Ory, has been investigating his case and found that Lacy was around 73 yards behind the collision. Ory also said that Lacy was on his way to a football workout and did not stop at the accident because he believed he was not involved in the crash.
Before making a name at LSU, Lacy was a three-star recruit as a high school player and signed to play at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for the Ragin’ Cajuns. He spent two years there before transferring to LSU in 2022. In his first two seasons with the Tigers, he had 54 receptions for 826 yards. Coming into 2024, he was named the number one receiver on the team and had 58 receptions for 866 yards. After a successful season, he declared for the 2025 NFL draft and was expected to be a top pick.
It has also been said that the Louisiana State Police have had inconsistencies with their account of the crash. As more details of his case continue to be released, many wonder if Lacy would have continued his career in the NFL if not for this horrific tragedy.
