On Sunday, Sept. 28, Mayor Eric Adams of New York City announced that he would be dropping out of the race to continue his second term as mayor, five weeks before Election Day, according to the New York Times.
The mayor released a nine-minute video message explaining that he no longer believes in a path of re-election for himself, even with his continuous efforts. Adams blames this choice on media speculation and a decision by the city’s Campaign Finance Board to deny him public matching funds for his campaign. In his video, not directly naming him, Adams issued a warning about Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani’s, the Democratic nominee and front-runner, political extremism, according to the New York Times.
Up till now, publicly, Adams was persistent on continuing the race and his campaign, however behind closed doors, the mayor was planning an escape route to avoid total embarrassment. Adams even discussed with President Trump the possibility of an ambassadorship to Saudi Arabia, but Adams did not release any information about another job following his mayorship. Since the deadline has since passed, Adams’ name will remain on the November ballot.
