West Essex’s junior Owen Lieberman’s passion for photography started with borrowing a camera. What began as a side hobby has become something more. Whether it’s on the sidelines at a Friday night football game or on the court at a basketball game, Lieberman is there with his camera.
Lieberman first got into photography freshman year after taking Digital Photography with Mrs. Clark. When he was the boys’ basketball manager, Lieberman would often find himself with a lot of free time, and being familiar with cameras, he started taking photos to pass the time during the games.
“At first, I saw it as a hobby, just having something to do during the basketball games,” Lieberman said. “But after doing more and more, I really enjoy it.”
Lieberman’s photos are popular on athletes’ Instagram pages, providing them with professional-quality photos that highlight their best moments on the field. Lieberman takes pride in his work, specifically when athletes are appreciative of them.
“The best part is giving athletes pictures that they can use to post,” Lieberman said. “It’s just a fun passion of mine, and I enjoy being outside and meeting new people.”
Balancing school and photography is not the easiest task, but Lieberman makes sure to stay organized by dedicating certain days to shooting photos, uploading and editing. He shoots his photos with a Canon EOS R50 and makes sure he is prepared for every game he goes to.
“I make sure I have all my equipment,” Lieberman said. “I’ll usually clean it with just a cleaning spray. I’ll make sure all my batteries are charged, and I will make sure that I’ll have whatever I need throughout the game.”
While building his skills and getting new equipment, Lieberman hopes to pursue photography as a career rather than just his high school hobby. His dream is to go on and shoot for the New York Giants in the electric atmosphere of MetLife Stadium. Starting on the football field side lines and the basketball court, Liberman has crafted a vision of how he wants to spend his future.
