The fan-favorite series “The Summer I Turned Pretty” has returned for its third and final season, setting the summer mood and bringing controversy with it. Set to release on July 16, fans anxiously await to find out whether Belly, the main character, decides to continue her relationship with Jeremiah, or pursue her unfinished love with Conrad.
Ever since Belly was a little girl, she had a crush on Conrad. As she got older, the crush developed into a relationship. The two ended up breaking off after the death of Conrad’s mother, leading to him being emotionally closed off. Since then, Belly has been grieving the relationship she lost with Conrad while trying something new with Jeremiah after he confessed his feelings for her.
Before the official announcement of the season, die-hard lovers of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” book series expected the season to unfold the same way the book did. However, author Jenny Han announced that the show will be going in a different direction. Han added special surprises to change up the storyline, but ensured that she would not do anything too crazy to mess up the existing story. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lola Tung, who plays Belly in the franchise, emphasized this message.
“She’s never going to do anything that doesn’t make sense for the story,” Tung said. “It’s all about this beautiful world she’s created and giving the fans something really, really special and giving us something really special to work with.”
At the end of Season 2, the show left off with Belly choosing to be with Jeremiah while starting their post-summer journey at Finch College. The final season will showcase romantic moments between the two, capturing the chemistry that Lola Tung and Gavin Casalegno display for the role.
However, as shown through the past two seasons, Belly and Conrad struggle to stay away from each other and continuously end up in an entanglement. This season is the big decision for Belly and could make or break the image of the show based on the result. Jeremiah fans are rooting for “Jellyfish,” while Conrad fans are hoping for “Bonrad.”
As Belly continues through college, the same question of which brother she will choose still remains. Fans in support of Jeremiah and Belly love how the two are best friends, while those in favor of Conrad love the heartfelt connection the two have developed since they were young, no matter the hardships they have gone through. The end of Belly’s story will soon unfold at the release of Season 3.
