West Essex senior, Thomas Ruane, is proud to have received The Unsung Hero Award on March 13. The Unsung Hero Award commemorates individuals who have made significant and positive contributions to their community. Through acts of service, Ruane has earned this award and consistently pushes to make a difference in the community.
Ruane has volunteered with different organizations and completed different service projects throughout high school. He has volunteered with the North Caldwell Fire Department for the past two years.
“I attend weekly meetings, complete training sessions and respond to active fire calls,” Ruane said.
As a junior firefighter, his work does not go unnoticed, hence why he received this significant award. He has also volunteered at the annual pancake breakfast and Oktoberfest fundraisers run by the fire department.
Other organizations Ruane provides services for include Big Piece Kayak Club and Heroes on the Water. He assists with event setup and clean-up. Heroes on the Water, a non-profit organization, mission is to provide recreational wellness experiences specifically through kayak fishing. Their goal is to create a community that can support and help each other heal. Ruane assists in this process by paddling alongside participants. He offers them any support needed with equipment and fishing gear. Ruane appreciates the organization’s values.
“Both organizations provide military, first responders and their families with an outdoor escape kayaking on the water, helping them heal from the challenges of service,” Ruane said.
Ruane gets his inspiration to serve his community from his father. His father is a Newark Police Officer, and Ruane said he is the reason he wanted to be a volunteer to support first responders and military organizations. Ruane views his service as an honor to support and give back to those who protect and serve.
In addition to commemorating those who complete service, the Unsung Hero Award focuses on the services that are considered underground. It recognizes those whose service is often behind the scenes and focuses on individuals who chose to support their community without seeking attention.
A common phenomenon with community service is the reward you feel after. People feel inspired and fortunate for what they have after helping others. Many people look to community service as an empowering opportunity. Ruane views his service in this way.
“My favorite part of volunteering has been meeting all the amazing people and the satisfaction of giving back to my community,” Ruane said. “It feels good to give back.”
