If Anthony Emering can give the Governor’s Educational Service Person of the Year, he could name 10 other people who deserve it more than him. Emering is a student assistant guidance counselor who has been working here for 18 years. West Essex High School chose Emering for this award because he is someone students can count on.
A student assistant counselor coordinates the 504 plans for people with learning disabilities and health problems. These plans can help students study, take tests, and feel less stressed about schoolwork. Emering helps these students use this plan to get through the school year. He is always welcoming to students who may not know him and is willing to listen if someone needs to talk.
Emering has made many contributions to the school that are not appreciated enough, which is a big reason he won this award. He doesn’t just care about working at the school; he also cares about the well-being and mental health of the staff and students he sees every day.
He is there to help staff with delicate situations and to make the right decisions without it not hurting anyone in the problem. Emering helps with mental health problems, bullying and substance abuse in students to get them on the right path for their future. He works with outside mental health clinics and law enforcement to find the answers to the problems.
Emering always has an open door if someone needs help. He is willing to sit there and talk for hours if he can. Having someone who wants to help and listen can go a long way.
Not many people in the school recognize the dedication Emering has to the school. He has put his everything into West Essex and this award shows the school’s appreciation for his work.
