With the slew of awards shows that take place each year, the evenings can quickly blur together as a faint memory of red carpets and awards given to the wrong person. Viewers assumed that the 2025 Golden Globes, the first award show of the new year, would fall into this category. However, comedian Nikki Glaser put on a performance that dazzled both celebrities and at-home viewers, making this show one to be remembered.
Glaser has been in the industry since she was 18, and with specials on Netflix and Max, her name has been well-known amongst comedians and those who follow them. However, on “The Roast of Tom Brady,” which premiered in May of 2024, Glaser’s cutting yet hilarious jokes about Brady’s ex-wife Gisele Bündchen drew attention from a widespread audience. The publicity from this helped Glaser land the role as host of the Golden Globes, and she did not disappoint.
Glaser started the night off with a joke referencing the widespread use of weight-loss drugs in Hollywood, calling the Globes “Ozempic’s biggest night.” Her joke, like many others she told that night, was pointed without being offensive and still garnered laughter from everyone. She brought up viral memes, like Cynthia Erivo grabbing Ariana Grande’s finger, and claimed that Benny Blanco landed Selena Gomez as his fiance because “a Genie granted him three wishes.” Glaser knew exactly what was appropriate to joke about and what crossed a line, ensuring that she created an entertaining experience for everyone.
At last year’s Golden Globes, comedian Jo Koy had a catastrophic performance. He made numerous offensive jokes and created an awkward atmosphere for the celebrities in the room. People online were deeply disappointed in his performance and Koy has not landed many major roles since. In contrast, Glaser’s skilled comedic performance received an outpouring of support on social media. Many have been saying that she redeemed the Globes after last year. It is the job of a comedian to know how to appeal to a crowd, and Glaser clearly has that ability. Her performance will hopefully land her more roles in the future and continue to expand her successful career, setting an example for other comedians about what audiences like.
