The Grammys are a time when the best in music from the past year is celebrated. Artists are recognized, albums are praised and dance performances are appreciated. Year after year, the voting members of the Academy pick the Grammy nominations for each category. However, they inevitably miss every year on big-name artists that fans think should have been nominated.
After the release of the 2025 Grammy nominations on Nov. 8, fans wasted no time taking to social media to share their displeasure with the candidates who did not make the list. Some of the most complained about artists included Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion.
Grande’s release of “Eternal Sunshine” in March 2024 received much praise from fans after not having a new album from the singer since her release of “Positions” in 2020. Many expected the album to be nominated for the Album of the Year category as well as her hit single “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” for the Song and Record of the Year categories. Surprisingly, Grande was not nominated for in any of these categories.
Dua Lipa has been no stranger to the Grammys ever since 2019 with her win of Best New Artist. Lipa has put out hit after hit and has dominated charts for long periods of time with some of her most notable songs such as “Levitating” and “Don’t Start Now” released in 2020. Even after the recognition Lipa received from her hit single “Houdini” released in Nov. 2023, her third studio album “Radical Optimism” released in May 2024, she has received no Grammy nominations.
In Jan. 2024, Megan Thee Stallion released the single “Hiss” to clap back at a number of artists who had been publicly disrespecting her. The song debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and gained attention for being an upbeat, catchy song. Despite this, Megan was not given a nomination for Best Rap Song.
The past year in music has been thrilling, with many popular artists dropping well-created songs and albums. The categories are neck and neck with top-notch artists and songs competing against one another that should all deserve a win if it was possible. Nevertheless, the Academy missed the mark this year with their nominations, discrediting many well-deserving artists who topped the charts.
