Coming off of a chaotic run in Season 3, the hit show “Outer Banks” made it difficult for some viewers to picture the show continuing. Season 4, Part 1 delivered, bringing viewers with an action-packed five episodes. This season stays close to its roots by revolving around friendships, while also adding in more characters, treasure hunting and questions left unanswered.
After long months of waiting, Season 4 started back up again beginning with the Pogues, a group of close knit teenagers that constantly put their lives on the line. Motivated by treasure, these teens have been through countless situations that bring them big rewards. At the end of Season 3, viewers were introduced to a new character, Wes Generette (David Jensen), who is later reintroduced in the beginning of Season 4 with an assignment for the Pogues. This journey kicks off the first mission for the Pogues.
Going back into Season 3, the Pogues successfully found El Dorado, the city of gold, and returned to the Outer Banks in hopes of finally getting to live a normal life. They built themselves a new home and run a surf shop, making profits from selling bait, tackle and other items regarding fishing and boats. After taking up Wes Generette on his offer, the Pogues find themselves committed to a whole new adventure and set out on their most high-risk quest yet, the mission to find Blackbeard’s treasure. Historical components are embedded into the story which makes this season feel even more realistic, including El Dorado, the lost city of gold and Blackbeard’s treasure.
Despite the many new additions into this season, the amount of new characters made it difficult to follow along. This season also goes in depth about family relationships that uncover hard truths. Some plot twists felt a bit unnecessary, dragging some moments on farther than needed. Specifically, the scene where the Pouges are dealing with property taxes and zoning.
With the first three seasons being extremely successful, the pressure was on to ensure the new season wouldn’t seem redundant. There are only so many ways to keep a show about finding treasure alive, but the producers made it happen through their hard work and creativity. This season highlights a brand new adventure for the characters that brought 15.5 million viewers and bumped the show to number one on Netflix. “Outer Banks” has also reached the Top 10 in 74 different countries.
Part 1 ends off with a nail-biting cliffhanger, leaving viewers wondering what other twists and adventures come in Part 2. Part 2 of Season 4 is expected to continue the adventure on Nov. 7 on Netflix.
