The electoral college is a system used to elect the president in the United States. This system has been debated for years. Many believe this system is fair, while others believe it should be abolished. As read in the ProCon.org article, “The Electoral College – Top 3 Pros and Cons”, the electoral college started as a compromise between electing the president by a vote in congress or a popular vote. In each state, electors are chosen by a political party. Most states use the “winner-take-all” method, where all electoral votes are given to the winner of the popular vote in that state. There are many pros to using the electoral college, like how it ensures that every part of the country is involved in the election. However, this system may cause some votes to be misrepresented. For example, the electoral college allows a state like Wyoming to have as much power as a much larger and populous state such as California. This system is very outdated and it is time to get rid of it. A better way of electing the president would be by congressional district. Each congressional district should count the votes of their district and then each state should represent the majority vote. Then the candidate that is favored throughout the country will win. This method is more effective than the electoral college because it is more specific and accurate to each state. As well as this, there would be no electors involved, who should not be deciding the fate of a country. The electoral college is skewed because it puts the destiny of a country containing 300 million people into the hands of only 538 people. The electoral college has been heavily debated for many years now and it is time for a change. The congressional district method would be more accurate, efficient, and fair to Americans.
