Since the dawn of America, the electoral college There have been 5 times in the history of the Electoral College where the president has won the popular vote but lost the election most recently 2016. This has resulted in an ongoing debate over abandoning the electoral college. But what is the best solution? Well before I discuss my revample plan, think of this, there’s a way that a candidate can win about 22% of the popular vote and still win the electoral college if they campaigned right. So people might believe that the electoral college is fine, and the idea itself is incredibly intuitive, but something needs to be tweaked in order to eliminate a loophole like this from occurring. So here is my revamped electoral process.
The first factor of the electoral college that needs to be changed is the minimum number of electoral votes per state of 3 votes. Instead the amount of votes should strictly be based on population so states like Hawaii, Alaska and Montana should lose some votes while California,
Texas and other large states should get the extra electoral votes they deserve. To insure that the ratio of people to electoral votes is balanced, every 10 years the states will be evaluated and the electoral votes per state will be redistributed similar to currently done but instead of the states minimum being 3 votes it will be changed to 1 vote with no requirement of having more as a prerequisite. Another large characteristic of the electoral process that needs to be altered is the magic number of 538 electoral votes. As long as there’s a way to win a majority, the number of electoral votes is not an issue. My idea is every 10 years after the most recent census, a number of people per electoral vote is decided and the college is revamped. So for example if it was agreed upon that for every 100 thousand people a state gets a vote, Wyoming would have 5 and NY would have 83. Obviously a new magic number to win would need to be decided, but by doing this the voting power of each person would be virtually identical. So while the electoral college is a pretty good system, slight tweaks should be made to make it perfect.
