The electoral college is a group of representatives from all 50 states who formally cast votes for the presidential election. Each state has a certain number of electoral voters. The smaller the state in population the less representatives they get and vice versa. We have and use the electoral college because it is a part of our constitution and we have been using it for hundreds of years. I do not think it is time to get rid of the electoral college because it means all parts of the country are getting represented and cared about by candidates and campaigns. If the election was based on the popular vote, candidates would only campaign in areas where there is a heavy population and this would mean a lot of areas of the country would be left out and an afterthought. Another reason we should keep the electoral college is because it is proven to work (most of the time). If we change the system, there could be a lot of questioning on if the election was legitimate or done correctly. Because the electoral college is proven, why would we change something that works and risk causing many more problems that don’t need to be started. If we were to get rid of the electoral college, we should elect the president by popular vote. Popular vote has been proven to work in other countries and would still be an effective way to choose the president. A popular vote is probably the alternative many people want who don’t like the electoral college system. As I somewhat said before, the popular vote will make certain parts of the country afterthoughts on the campaign map because there are not millions of people there. I don’t think this is good for anybody. The electoral college is definitely controversial, but I don’t think there should be changes to the system because of the negatives that would go along with it.
