The electoral college is a group of electors that are chosen based on the winner take all system in each state. If a state’s citizens vote blue, no matter how big or small teh gap is, the electors for that state will vote blue. This makes it so that certain states are more important than others. If some large states with many republican voters for example, goes blue, then all of those republican voter’s votes wouldn’t count towards the actual election. This is why many citizens feel that it is unfair for the electoral college to control the election instead of the overall population of the country. I believe that the electoral college should be removed in favor of a more straightforward popular vote. This vote would simply count the overall votes of the citizens to produce the most transparent outcome possible. Instead of middle-manning the election to avoid the apparent “stupidity” of the people, this system would ensure that the people’s wants and needs for this country are met. If the popular vote mostly predicts the presidential outcome anyway, then why shouldn’t it be the deciding factor of the election. It is thought that the republicans currently control a majority of the electoral college, so it may be difficult to have a bipartisan agreement. I don’t think that it is realistic to say that the electoral college will get abolished in one sweeping amendment. However, the U.S. should attempt to slowly phase out the electoral college. This could be done by giving more importance to the popular vote, instead of it just being a measuring stick of the people’s wants. This change could also encourage those who believe their vote doesn’t matter, to vote. This change would be very good for the country, which desperately needs to be shaken in its ways.
