The Electoral College is a group of 538 electors that elect the president and vice president of the United States. This is in place instead of the popular vote as back in the 1700’s there was no national news so the people in the state would vote for electors to go vote for the president they deemed fit. Each state gets at least three electoral votes, and then the rest is divided up for each state based on population. Washington DC also gets three electoral votes added in the 23rd amendment. The frame workers did not trust a direct democracy and believed it would be better to have electors but not the legislators electing the president. They wanted a separation of power from the legislative branch and executive branch which is why the electoral college is here. If something happened in DC when the electors arrived they were able to change their vote if needed as that is why they were sent there from their state. I don’t think it is time to get rid of the Electoral College as many states now require the electors to vote for who wins the popular vote in their state. It balances out the field with each state getting at least 3 electoral votes. I think keeping the Electoral College is a good idea as it keeps the tradition of what the founding fathers wanted and believed would work for this country. The Electoral College does work and only four times has a president lost the popular vote and won the electoral college. If we were to get rid of the electoral college I think we should go to ranked-choice voting as if the voter’s top choice does not win their vote will move over to their next candidate. This will let people have more of a choice and let them feel comfortable voting for third parties. However, keeping the Electoral College in place will keep the small states feeling like they have a say in their democracy and that they are not just overpowered by the big states.
