West Essex Girls Soccer has been an exciting team to watch with a really strong season so far. They started off the season going 6-0, and during that streak, an opponent only scored on them once. As the season progresses, they have proven to be a strong force on the field.
The team is mainly upperclassmen, meaning that experience and leadership are utilized to their fullest potential. Senior captains Logan Goldstein, Kalea Guzman and Sophie Foodim are all crucial parts of the team, leading and motivating everyone to win. Junior Brooke Balzano leads the team with 20 points and nine goals and senior Ashley Suhey has an impressive 83 saves so far.
Beyond their stats, the team is extremely competitive. Their losses are in two close games, falling to Montclair and West Orange, but those do not discredit all of their other wins. For the first time in over a decade, the team beat Kearny in a thrilling 1-0 match in early September.
As the season advances, girls’ soccer is looking to make a statement in the county playoffs and hopefully secure the win. Last year, they were a lower seed in the state tournament but still made a good run for themselves. This year, they look to bounce back and start higher to give themselves an advantage going into the competitive matchups.
