The West Essex Climate and Culture Committee held West Essex’s first “Knight of Knowledge” on March 6, 2024. Both workshops and a booster club unified the West Essex community at this event.
“It was…to nurture and uplift the community so we can all come together,” assistant principal Dr. Kimberly Westervelt said.
At the event, there was a booster club with tables from many clubs, from the fencing team to the Masquers of West Essex to boys soccer. Parents and students traveled through the fair to listen about the clubs from students who participate in them. There were multicultural snacks available for everyone’s enjoyment as they perused the tables.
In addition to the booster club tables, seven different workshops were offered. The sessions were held at 6:45 and at 7:30, and the workshops covered important topics including high school survival, responsible consumerism and nutrition. Holocaust survivor and author Michael Bornstein also had a workshop sharing his story. The discussions were held by a variety of West Essex staff and parents around the high school and around 100 participants went to listen.
The No Place for Hate Climate and Culture Committee, composed of both students and parents, wanted to find a way to bring the entire community together. Despite the rainy night, they accomplished this goal.
“I hope parents got out of it that the West Essex school district is here to support that and that we can work together in making sure that our students are succeeding and thriving,” Westervelt said.
