Each year, Hollywood’s top celebrities dress to the nines, walk the red carpet surrounded by cameras and get honored for their tremendous achievements in movies, television shows and music. While some fall flat and are not recognized for their hard work, others soared, making speech after speech and taking home multiple wins. Here are some of the most recognized artists, TV shows and movies from this award season.
THE GRAMMYS
Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” (released on Oct. 21, 2022) echoed on radios and speakers everywhere, prior to the first leg of Swift’s world-renowned “Eras Tour.” Now, Swift has been recognized for the collection’s success, receiving her 13th and 14th Grammys for both Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year. Following her first win of the night, Best Pop Vocal Album, Swift shocked fans by announcing a brand new album in her acceptance speech. The album, her 11th, is titled “The Tortured Poets Department” and is set to be released on April 19. Later on, Swift received the final award of the night, and the most honorable: Album of the Year. Swift made history with this win, being the first to ever win the award four times and surpassing her previous tie with music legends Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Frank Sinatra.
Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers,” released on Jan. 12, 2023, instantly made an impact on the music industry; its creative production and snarky lyrics helped the song to soar to the top of the charts. Cyrus was recognized for the hit song with her wins for both Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, earning Cyrus her first ever Grammy award. Cyrus released her debut album in 2007, and now, years later, is finally being recognized for her work. Cyrus’s excitement and pride in her success was made obvious during her Grammys performance shortly after winning her first award, when, mid-performance of “Flowers,” she yelled, “I just won my first Grammy!”
THE EMMYS
“The Bear” quickly rose to popularity and tied with “Succession” for the most Emmys this year with 6 awards. The series (now in its second season and renewed for a third) centers around Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, a chef in Chicago, and gives viewers an inside look into the restaurant industry. Along with Overall Comedy Series, “The Bear” took home several Emmys: Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeremy Allen White (Carmen Berzatto), Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Ayo Edibiri (Sydney Adamu) and Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Richard Jerimovich). Christopher Storer also received awards for Directing and Writing for a Comedy Series. These massive wins showcase the epic popularity of the show.
“Beef,” released to Netflix on April 6, centers around a road rage incident and the feud that it creates. Receiving five Emmys, “Beef” stood out after only its first season. The show was awarded with Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Director Lee Sung Jin and lead actors Steven Yeun (Danny Cho) and Ali Wong (Amy Lau) each won in their respective categories. Wong made history with this win. She became the first Asian woman to win Best Lead Actress at the Emmy awards.
THE GOLDEN GLOBES
“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s summer box-office hit, dominated at the Golden Globes, taking home five awards, the most for any TV show or movie during the night. The movie examines the creation of the atomic bomb in a drama which captivated audiences and dominated award shows. The film received recognition as this year’s Best Motion Picture —Drama, arguably the biggest category in the award show. They also took home Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for Cillian Murphy and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for Robert Downey Jr. Christopher Nolan was awarded Best Director and Ludwig Göransson received the award for Best Original Score.
HBO’s “Succession” took home four Golden Globes for its fourth season. The series centers around a family fighting over control of their media conglomerate. The show had a large audience and was very popular as it was airing. “Succession” took home the second most awards of the night, and the most of the television awards. These achievements included Best Television Series Drama, Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series Drama for Kieran Culkin, Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for Matthew Macfadyen and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series Drama for Sarah Snook. These achievements honor the show’s success and popularity in its final season.
