Following their third Super Bowl win in the last five years, the Kansas City Chiefs have proclaimed their well-earned title as a dynasty. The team has also reached six consecutive AFC championships and won the AFC four times in the last five years. They began their Super Bowl run in the 2019-2020 season against the 49ers and have since repeated that feat over the past two years. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has earned recognition as an unbeatable and all-time great player who has been key in leading his team to three titles.
Despite the Chiefs’ repeat Super Bowl wins, their season was far from perfect. A rocky end of the regular season resulted in three losses in December. These losses included upsets at the hands of the Las Vegas Raiders and Green Bay Packers, as well as a narrow loss to the rival Buffalo Bills.
In the AFC, the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills both finished with better records than the Chiefs. The Chiefs shut out the Miami Dolphins in their first playoff game and defeated both the Ravens and Bills on their path to the Super Bowl. The odds were stacked against them as they battled two elite quarterbacks on the road, including the league MVP, Lamar Jackson. Despite many doubters, the Chiefs were still able to pull off their fourth all-time Super Bowl win.
In Super Bowl LIV in 2020, the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20. The Chiefs entered the fourth quarter down 20-10 but stormed back and scored 21 unanswered points. Andy Reid clinched his first Super Bowl win, which snapped a 50-year Super Bowl drought for Kansas City.
The Chiefs suffered a Super Bowl loss in 2021 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-9. Buccaneers quarterback, Tom Brady, led an electric offense that allowed them to score four touchdowns and a field goal to win the game. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs were completely shut down on both ends of the field to prevent them from scoring a single touchdown. Even after their horrific loss nothing stopped them from bouncing back two seasons later.
Super Bowl LVII added a second ring to Mahomes’ collection. The Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35. Despite a powerful Eagles’ offense and defense, the Chiefs were able to come out on top. After being down 10 at halftime, Mahomes was able to lead another comeback to achieve another ring.
Most recently, they took home Super Bowl LVIII, in a 25-22 rematch with the 49ers. The Chiefs and 49ers finished off the regular game tied and went into overtime. The 49ers had the ball first and kicked a field goal to gain the lead, but the Chiefs came back and scored the final touchdown to win. A repeat victory for them began a new legacy for the team.
They may have had weak Super Bowl starts but have come out victorious thrice in five years. Their top-notch offense and defense have allowed them to become one of the greatest teams in NFL history. Now being recognized as a dynasty, the sky’s the limit for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
On Feb. 14 after their hard-earned win, the Chiefs players and fans celebrated in Kansas City at their Super Bowl parade. Unfortunately, the parade was met with extreme sadness and violence as a shooter opened fire on the crowds. Right now there is one confirmed death and several other reported injuries. The current suspicion is that the suspect was enraged after a fight. Police currently have a suspect in custody, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
