The newest addition to “The Bachelor” franchise, “The Golden Bachelor,” has piqued a new interest in viewers for the aging franchise, but not without controversy.
“The Golden Bachelor” joined the franchise in September along with “The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise.” This version of the show includes a cast ranging from 60 to 75 years old. The star is 72-year-old widow, Gerry Turner, who was looking for a second chance at love.
Fans have rewarded the format with high ratings. “The Golden Bachelor” has received higher ratings than any other bachelor series since 2020. The finale tops the franchises’ previous top rating by about 800,000 viewers across all demographics.
The aspect of getting a second chance at love and making the most of every moment are reasons for the show’s success. In the other bachelor franchises, the question of being there “for the right reasons” is a theme. The franchise has become an influencer launchpad resulting in people going on the show to increase their followers, not to fall in love.
This season did not see a villain or fighting amongst the contestants. They seemed to generally support and like each other. Many did not even have social media. The finale ended with an engagement and a heartbreak proving dating is difficult at any age.
The successful ratings, though, do not mean that the series did not have any flaws. One complaint is Turner was indecisive with the contestants telling both finalists he was in love with them. The format requires the bachelor to string people along just to break up with them, but with this group of contestants, the heartbreaking exits felt exceptionally cruel.
A day before the finale was released, “The Hollywood Reporter” published an expose on Turner accusing him of lying about his work history and recent romantic relationships. According to this article, Turner “forgot” to mention multiple relationships including one long-term girlfriend. Although this can just be people looking for attention, this wouldn’t be the first time the franchise has missed red flags during casting.
Although ABC has not yet confirmed a “Golden Bachelorette” they have confirmed that they will air “The Golden Bachelor” wedding special, “The Golden Wedding,” on Jan. 4. This will be the first time there has been a televised wedding since 2014. The average franchise relationship lasts three months after the season finale airs so hopefully ABC has a backup for this timeslot.
“The Golden Bachelor” isn’t perfect, but it’s still worth watching. Whether it’s the belief in never being too late to find love or wanting to watch strong female friendships form, this show is a heartwarming addition to the franchise.
