Millions of Americans have some Hispanic background that influences their lives every day. West Essex celebrates those of Hispanic descent during this month and acknowledges Hispanic students’ culture through sharing special facts of the day with all students.
The celebrations start on Sept. 15 and end on Oct. 15. Sept. 15 is the anniversary of the independence of many Latin American countries, such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. This month gives special recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States by those with Hispanic heritage.
West Essex is a diverse environment with various different cultures. During this month, students in the Multicultural Club tell the story of a different Hispanic figure each morning on the loudspeaker. It is important to be reminded of the groundbreaking accomplishments these people have had in their fields. So far, the stories of celebrities like Sofia Vergara and Roberto Clemente have been heard, as well as historical figures like Ellen Ocha, the first Hispanic woman in space.
“One of the founding principles of the Multicultural Club is to foster respect for diverse cultures,” Ms. Duby, the head of the Multicultural club says. “Reading the morning announcements is our way of raising awareness that one of the wonderful things about our country is how people from many different cultures have contributed to our national identity.”
West Essex, and the entire country, uses this month to celebrate influential Hispanic people. Hispanic Heritage month is not the only special interest month that the school recognizes. Throughout the year, the school will spotlight other important cultures, as they have done in the past. It’s important for all West Essex students to feel recognized and a part of something bigger. These morning announcements ultimately shed light on other cultures and encourage student importance in shaping American identity. Happy Hispanic Heritage month!
