The G20 Summit, which is when the 20 biggest global economies meet with each other, has been pivotal in United States relations with the 20 largest countries in the world since it started. This year’s G20 New Delhi summit, the first to be held in India, was the 18th meeting and by all accounts an overall success.
This year, The African Union joined the G20 as a permanent member. A new organization called the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA), whose goal is to promote the development of sustainable biofuels, was launched. It plans to transition away from fossil fuels by adopting more sustainable energy options, according to a post from the White House on Sept. 9.
The biggest accomplishment was the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, a joint agreement to build a rail and shipping corridor linking India with the Middle East and Europe, according to a post from The Hill on Sept. 15. The group includes India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Israel and the European Union.
The G20 nations also made it clear that countries cannot take other territory by force and highlighted the suffering of the people in Ukraine. However, they avoided directly blaming Russia for the war. This was highly criticized because many felt that they took a softer position on Russia than last year’s summit.
While the G20 summit accomplished its key goals, there were some controversial points as well.
