Winners and nominees of the 78th Golden Globes
March 2, 2021
The 78th annual Golden Globes Awards was on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 8:00 p.m. after being delayed for nearly two months amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosted the virtual ceremony, with Fey at the Rainbow Room in New York City and Poehler at The Beverly Hilton in California (where the ceremony traditionally takes place). Netflix led the nominees with a whopping 42 nominations. “Mank,” the streaming service’s original film about “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz received most of the nominations (six nominations) despite not winning any. Netflix’s “The Crown” also garnered six nominations and won best drama, best actress (Emma Corin), best actor (Josh O’Connor) and best supporting actress (Gillian Anderson). The massively popular Netflix TV show “The Queen’s Gambit” also won awards for best miniseries or TV film and best actress in a miniseries or motion picture TV (Anya Taylor-Joy).
Chadwick Boseman posthumously won best actor in a drama for what became his final movie role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
The second woman ever to win best director was awarded to Chloé Zhao who directed “Nomadland.” This also makes Zhao the first ever Asian woman to win the award for best director. The first and previously only woman to win best director was Barbara Streisand for “Yentl” in 1984, leaving 37 years between the two awards.
