Cybersecurity offers safety lessons for all

Curious about how to protect yourself and your information online? Well, Vincent Carchietta’s new Cybersecurity course can help out — it’s all about managing computer systems and being safe online.

Cybersecurity is new to West Essex, and it is brought to you by a man of many hats, Carchietta. If you’re looking to do something with computer science in the future, or not, this course is perfect for all people, teaching the basics of being safe online.

“Cybersecurity is the biggest thing that is happening in America today,” Carchietta said. With almost every school and company in the world at least partly online because of COVID-19, cybersecurity can benefit everyone.

Beyond just online safety, global job demands are up and taking this course can inform students about future options. Encryption in credit cards and documents, ciphering and software security are just a few of the topics the course approaches.

“It’s only a half year course, so it’s not a lot of in-depth information, but we will introduce everything that we can,” Carchietta said. This course doesn’t leave anyone out, and taking it half year can be the perfect time to try something new.

Cybersecurity — the protection of internet connected systems such as hardware, software and data from cyber threats — is an emerging modern field, with technology being one of the biggest things in the world today and revolving around our daily lives. There have been many incidents through the government and politics involving cybersecurity, and to be educated on this can help understand these situations.

“As a computer teacher I felt an obligation and Mr. Diliberto also had the idea that we should really introduce this to the school population and expand our program,” Carchietta said.
