The 150-seat Roxbury Diner is a full service restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, catering, takeout and delivery with Uber Eats and Doordash. The diner has been in service since 1986, and the Dontas family bought it in 2003. Dishes they are known for include their prime rib and fresh roasted turkey. For dessert, their homemade cheesecake is a favorite. The liquor license allows customers to drink at the diner, as well. The Dontas’s favorite part about owning the diner is meeting all of their guests and being able to create an inviting atmosphere that all of their customers will enjoy.

How did Roxbury Diner get its start? It was an existing diner that was being run to the ground because the owner was older and could not properly manage it anymore. It was run down and dilapidated; we bought it and had to change the people’s perception of the place. We did that by cleaning up the place, doing some minor renovations and bringing new enthusiasm, more hospitable personalities, an updated menu and new and better-trained staff.

How long has the business been open? The place has been here a long time. It was originally an ice cream shack, that became a small luncheonette, then in 1986 it was built from the ground up into the current diner and building that is here now. Again, we bought it in October of 2003, changed the name to Roxbury Diner — and have been here since then.

What are some of the ways people could best support your business right now? We went from a thriving 150 seat sit-down diner/restaurant with 45-50 employees, to strictly takeout and delivery restaurant with 8-10 employees. I guess the best way for people to support our business now is to call for curbside pickup, takeout and delivery.
