Top 5 Worst Movies
The past year produced many dazzling films with stunning visuals, outstanding acting and jaw-dropping plots. But not every movie made over the year rose to the challenge and became an iconic storytelling masterpiece. Some movies were boring, or they had unconvincing acting or cliche and cringey plots. They can’t all be winners, so here are five movies that were some of the biggest entertainment disappointments of 2022.
1. “Hocus Pocus 2” – F
“Hocus Pocus 2” was surely the biggest disappointment. After the announcement of a sequel to a decade old classic which shaped childhood memories, these hopes instantly vanished within the initial ten minutes of the film. Two teenagers simultaneously reconnect with an old friend while bringing back the notorious Sanderson sisters, despite them being permanently vanished in the ending of the previous movie. This wannabe classic was a boring movie with countless plot holes and cringey scenes including one of hundred year old witches encountering a modern day convenience store. Overall this movie was a disappointing, boring waste of two hours of my life that I will never get back.
2. “Something from Tiffany’s” – D
This lightly-promoted Amazon original with a dazzling cast of Zoey Deutch and Kendrick Sampson was nothing but a let down. A seemingly heartwarming romantic comedy from the trailer quickly turned into the most cringey movie of the year by far. The attempt at a romance had so many unlikable characters that made this boring tale difficult to get through. The movie is so cliche that it appears to be similar to a hallmark movie, only worse. Two men accidentally swap Christmas gifts for their girlfriends, a basic plot with a predictable ending. Nothing is noteworthy about this movie, making it one of the worst I’ve seen throughout 2022 and overall.
3. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” – D+
“Minions: The Rise of Gru” is one which has attracted nothing but attention in 2022, but not for good reason. The film was Illumination’s newest addition to the “Minion” and “Despicable Me” series that explored Gru’s childhood which led him to villa hood. The movie gained popularity over a TikTok trend where teenagers arrived at the theaters in suits and prom dresses. This trend attracted viewers who were dissatisfied by the actual film, but not by the enjoyment of the theater-going experience. As someone who experienced this film on opening weekend, the lobby walking into the movie was ten times more enjoyable than the mediocre children’s cult classic. A dream to seven year olds but a nightmare to seventeen year olds, this movie unprecedentedly broke records despite only fulfilling young children, if that.
4. “My Policeman” – C
There is no denying that “My Policeman” is a heartbreaking tale that is sure to evoke tears in the eyes of all viewers for the direction of the film. The movie takes place decades ago, where gay couples had to hide behind cover ups and were persecuted if discovered. Although the plot seems interesting, the movie was extremely boring. The acting and plot were top tier, but slow progression made the movie hard to get through. A predictable and painfully depressing ending was what ruined the film for me, especially as a viewer who tries to avoid movies with sad endings at all cost. But the undeniable talent of Harry Styles, David Dawson and Emma Corrin were what saved this movie.
5. “Thor: Love and Thunder” – C
“Thor: Love and Thunder” was a tremendous disappointment for the film industry. Marvel’s movies usually excel, with interesting and eye-catching plots that grasp onto the viewers from the second Marvel logo played onto the screen to the ending of the final end credit scene. But this movie, however, stood out, and not in a good way. Thor is met with new and old friends to defeat Gorr the God Butcher and solve a mystery. Although the movie’s trailer left fanatics with high hopes, especially due to the presence of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the iconic crew was not in more than one scene. This forgettable and boring movie left a theater that began with nearly fifty people with only about ten before the final fight scene even began. Fans were driven out of the film due to the unmemorable plot (some might even forget what happens in the opening scene by the midway point of the film) and a lack of comedy like previous marvel films. The only redeeming quality was the outstanding cast, as icons like Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale and Nathalie Portman stole the show and were the only aspect worth discussion.
